Rubble kings

A documentary film by Shan Nicholson, USA, 2010

Rubble kings documents the courageous movements that combated the widespread gang scene in New York during the late sixties and early seventies and provided the inspiration for Walter Hill’s cult classic The Warriors. Outside of the civil rights movement, people fought for their rights in the street. From the eventual end of these violent times came the birth of a new cultural movement, hip-hop. Nicholson delicately documents a world-changing era that spread a beat from the streets of New York around the globe and brought the city out of an era of gang violence.

Mur murs

Directed by Agnes Varda, France-USA, 1981

The Harder They Come, 1972

A poor Jamaican, a 1970s anti-hero, tries to make it with a hit record but finds that payola rules. His record will only be played if he signs away his rights. He turns to dealing marijuana and runs afoul of the law. As an underground fugitive, he becomes a political hero. An outstanding reggae soundtrack underscores the plot, in particular the lines from the title song: "I'd rather be a free man in my grave than living as a puppet or a slave."

El Acordeón del Diablo

El Acordeón del Diablo (Francisco el Hombre - Pacho Rada)

"Pacho Rada was one of the first troubadours to travel around the country playing unaccompanied, with just his voice and the accordion, bearing news and making music wherever someone had something to celebrate. He dreamt up hundreds of new songs on his travels, many of which have become classics.
He is known as the man who invented "son", one of the four Vallenato rhythms. However, Pacho was already too old by the time that musicians could get rich playing Vallenato music, when it became popular outside the province due to the marihuana boom in the seventies. At the age of 72 he became homeless once again."

Salsa in New York has a deep latin vibe that allows South Americans to exhibit and celebrate their language and culture. "
